Saint Bernards - Breed History

The direct ancestors of Saint Bernards were the large farm dogs that were widely spread across the region. Within a few generations after the establishment of the ideal type, they were bred into the present day breed. Heinrich Schumacher, from Holligen near Berne, Switzerland, was the first to document and to provide pedigrees for his dogs. In February 1884, the "Schweizerische Hundestammbuch" (SHSB), the Swiss Dog Stud Book, was opened. The very first entry was the St. Bernard "Leon", and the following 28 entries were also all St. Bernards. The Swiss St. Bernard Club was founded in Basle on March 15th, 1884.

Saint Bernards - Health Issues

Due to their large size, Saint Bernards are prone to hip dysplasia. Both parents, grandparents and littermates should be OFA certified. Bone problems, heart defects, bloat, entropion and epilepsy should also be watched out for in the breed. Discuss these health conditions with your breeder and your vet so that you are aware of the symptoms and the ways in which you can help, if some problem occurs.

Saint Bernards - Grooming

The Saint Bernard's coat is easy to groom. Combing and brushing with a bristle brush and bathing only when necessary cover the grooming requirements. The Saint Bernard sheds twice a year. Your Saint's eyes should be paid some special attention. Check the eyes regularly to make sure that they are clean. Watch out for signs of ear diseases as well. Brushing the teeth should also be a part of your dog's daily grooming routine. Sticking to this routine makes Saint Bernards look glamorous.
