The body is strong with a moderately deep chest and a very broad back. The long tail is very heavy. It hangs straight down turning a little upward when the dog is quiet. In action, the Saint Bernard carries the tail turned upward.

The dense coat is lying smooth. The tail and the thighs are bushy. The dog's coat does not feel rough to the touch of the hand. Permissible coat colors are combinations of white and red, the red color in its various shades, and brindle patches with white markings.

The longhaired Saint Bernard resembles the shorthaired type in the physical description, except for the coat. The coat of the longhaired Saint Bernard is of a medium length, neither wavy nor shaggy.

Saint Bernards have a gentle nature. They are friendly and tolerant with children. Slow moving and slightly phlegmatic, Saint Bernards are obedient and patient. The Saint Bernard is smart, and willing to please its owner. The Saint Bernard owners should remember that these dogs need early socialization because it is quiet difficult to handle such a huge dog, if it misbehaves. Saint Bernards are very good watchdogs.
